Hart, kantig und einfach

The title is taken from a book of photographs taken by the german sculptor and photographer Fritz Kühn of Insel Hiddensee, off the Baltic coast of Germany. I found it at one of my favorite antiquarian bookstores in Berlin, and the photograph of the houses in this collage comes from the book.

In this animation I wanted to illustrate some of the thinking that goes into building a collage, call attention to choices an artist has when working with images, and what juxtapositions of different images means. There’s a lot more in this vein to investigate.

I also wanted to get back to a very “meat & potatoes” animation style - no fancy plug-ins, no depth maps created by AI, no extreme close-up 3d. Just shapes moving on a background. Sometimes simple does the job.

Score and sound design by Emily Hawkins.
